The town of Pleven is situated in the central part of the Danube Valley near the river Vit. It has a thousand-year-old history that accounts of the different tribes and people who inhabited its territory and the surrounding area. In the first millennium B. C., "Kaylaka" place was inhabited by Thracian tribes. In the area surrounding the town there was discovered the biggest golden treasure in Bulgaria (the golden treasure of Valchitran) which marks the cultural progress of the Thracian tribes inhabiting that area. In the IV-VI century the Romans founded a road station and the fortress “Storgozia”. They are partialy preserved and renovated: the fortification system, early-Christian basilica and choreum. The original name of Pleven was namely Storgozia. The present name of the town was first mentioned in a document dated 1266. In 17th-18th centur, the town’s population began to increase and the cultural life began to flourish. The town became popular in Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula with trading in sheep and livestock

In 1825, the first non-clerical school opened doors and in 1840 Anastasia Dimitrova established the first girls’ school in Bulgaria. The town became popular for its active involvement in the Russian-Turkish war in 1877-1878 which resulted in Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman Rule. Pleven is one of the biggest Bulgarian towns with rich history and lots of historic sites. One of the most significant and famous places in the town is the Panorama of the "Pleven Epopee in 1877" which depicts the battles through pictures, plastic arts and art as a whole and thus providing a realistic picture of the war. The historical museum in the town of Pleven is one of the best museums in Bulgaria possessing one the richest exhibitions with more than 180 000 valuables in stock – documents and historical evidences, specimens of the material and spiritual culture.
